Backstory

WARNING: The events depicted on this blog are real.

I have a split personality. Or so I’ve been told. There are two distinct sides of me which make up one unique personality. Or at least that’s what I tell myself.
Allow me to introduce you to us.

miss donna

Can best be described as:
  • witty
  • non-conformist
  • hot wing aficionado
I'm constantly evolving  and consistently frugal. I'm a mom…who happens to blog, but if you call me a “mommy blogger” – it’s on! I've never been fond of labels (designer or otherwise) and exercise the right to change my mind. Frequently. Without notice.

I sip adult beverages, strongly believe that shit damn or ass isn't profanity, and say grace before meals and snacks. I'm self-diagnosed with mild-to-moderate OCD and accessorize religiously.
You’re likely to bump into me at:
  • a smoke-free pool hall
  • Jay-Z concert
  • clearance rack

the unemployed entrepreneur®
I was fired from my job as Operations Manager for a staffing and recruiting firm in 2008. I looked for work and collected unemployment until May 2010. During that time, I started blogging and founded a women's entrepreneurial group. Although I make zero dollars doing it, I consider myself a professional blogger. That's one of the perks of hiring yourself - you can change your title as often as you change your underwear.

My dreams of being my own boss started when I was 16 years old. I wanted to become a truck driver. As dumb as that sounds, I was smart enough to know I'd be more profitable if I actually owned the truck and hired my brother to drive for me. My Daddy didn't buy the dump truck and my Mama is adamant in her refusal to acknowledge having told me, "Girls don't drive trucks". It wasn't until I became an adult that I realized my Daddy was an entrepreneur. When I asked where he worked he'd respond in the most humbling way, "I work for myself". He owned two trucks that he used to haul junk. He died when I was 18 and shortly after I found myself in an abusive relationship.

If I had to write a summary of my professional experience it would look like this: 15 jobs by the age of 22.

The Unemployed Entrepreneur® isn't someone I became. It's who I've been my entire life.

I live by three simple principles:

  • Action - get up and do something!
  • Authenticity - when you do it, embrace your genuine self!
  • Accountability - don't make excuses as to why you can't do it...whatever IT is!

I'm a contributing writer to Forbes and achieved a lifelong dream of becoming a radio personality. In 2010, I signed on with Austin Community Radio, Inc. on KAZI 88.7 FM and joined the Thursday morning Juice & Jam crew, a variety talk show. I'm the only female co-host.

Why Read My Blog?

This is the place where you get a sneak peek into one woman's success story as it unfolds. Often times, we don't hear about these stories until after someone has made a name for themselves. No matter if you're an entrepreneur, employee, student, or stay-at-home mom, I'm bound to write something you can relate to and you may even be inspired.

Here are a few things I'm particularly proud of:
  • was featured in Redbook and All You magazines
  • contributed to ForbesWoman's 12 Things Every Business Professional Should Know and is now one of their contributing writers
  • became a radio host with no experience whatsoever
  • launched two women's groups: one for entrepreneurs, another for public speaking
  • went against the advice of others and started blogging here instead of WordPress (here's where Forbes found me)
  • provided commentary to HGTV's Front Door, CNN.com, and Austin American Statesman
  • received national media exposure by appearing on CNBC's The Big Idea (2008)
